    Description

    Galfer Ferrous Fumarate 305mg – 100 Capsules

Galfer Ferrous Fumarate 305mg capsules are used to treat and prevent iron deficiency anaemia — a condition where your body does not have enough iron to make healthy red blood cells. Each pack contains 100 capsules, with each capsule providing 305mg of ferrous fumarate.

    How It Works

Iron is an essential mineral your body needs to produce haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around the body. Ferrous fumarate is a form of iron that is well absorbed through the gut, helping to restore your body’s iron levels and support the normal formation of healthy red blood cells.

    Directions for Use

For the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia in adults and children aged 12 years and over, the usual dose is one capsule taken twice daily. For the prevention of iron deficiency, one capsule daily is generally recommended. Capsules should be swallowed whole with a full glass of water and can be taken with or after food to help reduce stomach upset. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.

    Active Ingredients

    • Ferrous fumarate 305mg per capsule

    Possible Side Effects

    • Nausea or feeling sick
    • Stomach pain or discomfort
    • Constipation
    • Diarrhoea
    • Dark or black stools (this is harmless and expected)
    • Loss of appetite
    • Heartburn or indigestion

If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

    • People who are allergic to ferrous fumarate or any other ingredient in the capsule
    • People with conditions that cause iron overload, such as haemochromatosis
    • People with anaemia not caused by iron deficiency (e.g. haemolytic anaemia)
    • People with certain bowel conditions such as bowel inflammation (unless advised by a doctor)
    • Children under 12 years of age (unless under medical supervision)

    Interactions

Ferrous fumarate can interact with several medicines and foods. Taking iron at the same time as certain antibiotics (such as tetracyclines and quinolones), bisphosphonates, levodopa, levothyroxine, or antacids can reduce the absorption of either the iron or the other medicine — it is generally recommended to take them at least two hours apart. Tea, coffee, and foods high in phytates (such as wholegrain cereals) may also reduce iron absorption, whilst vitamin C (ascorbic acid) can help increase it. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

    Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Iron supplementation is commonly required during pregnancy, as iron needs increase significantly to support the growing baby. Ferrous fumarate is generally considered suitable for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding when recommended by a healthcare professional. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

    Alcohol

There is no known direct interaction between ferrous fumarate and alcohol. However, excessive alcohol consumption can affect the gut and may impair the absorption of iron, so it is sensible to drink alcohol only in moderation whilst taking this medicine.

    Driving and Operating Machinery

Galfer Ferrous Fumarate capsules are not known to cause drowsiness or affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. You should be safe to drive and use machines as normal whilst taking this medicine.

    Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
