CosmoCol Plain – 30 Sachets

CosmoCol Plain is a laxative used to relieve constipation in adults and children aged 12 years and over. It helps to soften stools and restore regular bowel movements, making it easier to go to the toilet.

How It Works

CosmoCol Plain contains macrogol 3350, which works by drawing water into the bowel from the rest of the body. This softens hard stools and increases the volume of contents in the bowel, which gently stimulates the bowel to move and pass a stool more easily.

Directions for Use

Adults and children aged 12 years and over should take 1 to 3 sachets per day, as needed. Each sachet should be dissolved in 125 ml (roughly half a glass) of water, stirred well, and drunk straight away. It may take 1 to 2 days before a bowel movement occurs. Do not take more than 3 sachets in any 24-hour period. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.

• Sodium chloride – 350.7 mg per sachet
• Sodium bicarbonate – 178.5 mg per sachet
• Potassium chloride – 46.6 mg per sachet

Possible Side Effects

• Bloating or a feeling of fullness
• Stomach pain or cramps
• Nausea
• Diarrhoea or loose stools
• Vomiting
• Wind (flatulence)
• Allergic reactions (such as skin rash or itching — uncommon)

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

• People with a known allergy to macrogol 3350 or any other ingredient in this product
• People with a perforated bowel or a risk of bowel perforation
• People with a blockage in the bowel (intestinal obstruction)
• People with a condition that causes the bowel to become paralysed (paralytic ileus)
• People with severe inflammatory bowel conditions, such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, during an acute flare
• Children under 12 years of age (this formulation is not licensed for use in younger children)

Interactions

CosmoCol Plain may affect the absorption of other medicines taken at the same time, as it increases water in the bowel and speeds up gut movement. It is generally advised to avoid taking other oral medicines within one hour of taking CosmoCol Plain. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

CosmoCol Plain is not significantly absorbed into the body, which means it is considered to have a low risk of harm during pregnancy and breastfeeding. However, as with all medicines, caution is advised. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

Alcohol

There is no known interaction between CosmoCol Plain and alcohol. However, alcohol can contribute to dehydration, which may worsen constipation. It is advisable to drink plenty of water while taking this medicine and to keep alcohol intake to a minimum.

Driving and Operating Machinery

CosmoCol Plain does not cause drowsiness and is not expected to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. It is considered safe to drive whilst taking this medicine, provided you feel well in yourself.

Storage

Store CosmoCol Plain below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Once dissolved in water, the solution should be used immediately and not stored for later use. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
