Description
Benylin Dry Cough 7.5mg/5ml Syrup – 150ml
Benylin Dry Cough Syrup is a pharmacy medicine used to relieve dry, tickly, and irritating coughs. It is suitable for adults and children aged 12 years and over.
⸻
How It Works
The active ingredient, dextromethorphan hydrobromide, acts on the cough centre in the brain to temporarily suppress the urge to cough. This helps reduce the frequency of dry, unproductive coughing, providing effective short-term relief.
⸻
Directions for Use
Adults and children aged 12 years and over: take 10ml (two 5ml spoonfuls) up to four times a day. Do not exceed 40ml in 24 hours. This medicine is not recommended for children under 12 years of age. Always use the measuring spoon or cup provided and do not take more than the recommended dose. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.
⸻

Who Should Not Take This Medicine
• Children under 12 years of age
• People who are allergic to dextromethorphan or any other ingredient in this product
• People taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or who have taken them in the last 14 days
• People with severe liver or kidney problems
• People with a history of certain rare metabolic conditions — refer to the patient information leaflet for full details
⸻
Interactions
Dextromethorphan can interact with several medicines, including MAOIs (such as phenelzine or tranylcypromine), certain antidepressants (such as fluoxetine, paroxetine, or amitriptyline), antipsychotics, and medicines that cause drowsiness. Taking this syrup with other cough and cold remedies that also contain dextromethorphan should be avoided to prevent exceeding the recommended dose. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.
⸻
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
The safety of dextromethorphan during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been fully established. It is generally recommended to avoid this medicine during pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding unless specifically advised by a healthcare professional. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.
⸻
Alcohol
You should avoid drinking alcohol whilst taking Benylin Dry Cough Syrup. Alcohol can increase the sedative effect of dextromethorphan, making drowsiness worse and increasing the risk of side effects.
⸻
Driving and Operating Machinery
Benylin Dry Cough Syrup may cause drowsiness or dizziness in some people. If you are affected, do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or carry out any activities that require full concentration until you feel well enough to do so safely.
⸻
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Do not refrigerate. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
