What is omeprazole?
Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces the amount of acid your stomach makes. It is used for acid reflux, heartburn and stomach ulcers.
Brands and strengths
Omeprazole is the name of the active ingredient. In the UK it is sold as generic omeprazole and under brand names including Losec, Mepradec and Pyrocalm — all contain the same active ingredient and work the same way. Common strengths:
- Omeprazole 10 mg tablets

- Acid reflux and heartburn (GORD)
- Stomach and duodenal ulcers

How to take omeprazole
Usually taken once a day, before food (often in the morning). Swallow capsules whole with water. Always follow your prescriber’s instructions (BNF).
Side effects
