What is lansoprazole?

Lansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces stomach acid. It is used for acid reflux, heartburn and ulcers.

Brands and strengths

Lansoprazole is the name of the active ingredient. In the UK it is sold as generic lansoprazole and under the brand name Zoton — both contain the same active ingredient and work the same way. Common strengths:

  • Lansoprazole 15 mg tablets
  • Lansoprazole 30 mg tablets
  • UK brand: Zoton

What lansoprazole is used for

  • Acid reflux and heartburn (GORD)
  • Stomach and duodenal ulcers
  • Protecting the stomach on certain medicines

How to take lansoprazole

Usually taken once a day in the morning, before food. Swallow capsules whole with water. Always follow your prescriber’s instructions (BNF).

Side effects
