What is codeine?
Codeine is an opioid painkiller for pain not relieved by simpler painkillers. Because it can cause dependence, it is for short-term use.
Brands and strengths
Codeine is the name of the active ingredient. In the UK it is sold as generic codeine and under brand names including Galcodine and Bepro — all contain the same active ingredient and work the same way. Common strengths:
- Codeine 15 mg tablets
- Codeine 30 mg tablets
- Codeine 60 mg tablets
- UK brands: Galcodine and Bepro
What codeine is used for
- Short-term moderate pain
How to take codeine
Take as prescribed and do not exceed the dose. Codeine can cause dependence, so use it for the shortest time needed and do not stop suddenly after long use without advice. Always follow your prescriber’s instructions (BNF).
Side effects
Common effects include constipation, drowsiness and feeling sick. Do not drive until you know how it affects you. This is not a full list — see the patient information leaflet (BNF).
