Description
Guardium Acid Reflux Control – 14 Tablets
Guardium Acid Reflux Control tablets are used to relieve the symptoms of acid reflux, including heartburn and acid regurgitation (the sensation of acid rising into the throat). Each pack contains 14 tablets, providing up to a two-week course of treatment for adults aged 18 and over.
⸻
How It Works
Guardium contains esomeprazole, which belongs to a group of medicines called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). It works by blocking the “proton pump” — a tiny mechanism in the lining of your stomach that produces acid — thereby reducing the amount of acid your stomach makes. This helps to relieve the burning discomfort and irritation caused by acid reflux.
⸻
Directions for Use
Guardium Acid Reflux Control is suitable for adults aged 18 and over only. The recommended dose is one 20 mg tablet taken once daily, swallowed whole with a glass of water, at least one hour before eating. Do not chew or crush the tablet. Treatment should not exceed 14 days without consulting a doctor. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.
⸻
Active Ingredients
• Esomeprazole 20 mg (as esomeprazole magnesium trihydrate) per tablet
⸻
Possible Side Effects
Like all medicines, Guardium can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. Common side effects may include:
• Headache
• Stomach pain or discomfort
• Diarrhoea
• Nausea or vomiting
• Flatulence (wind)
• Constipation
• Dry mouth
If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.
⸻
Who Should Not Take This Medicine
Do not take Guardium Acid Reflux Control if you:
• Are allergic to esomeprazole, other PPIs, or any of the other ingredients
• Are under 18 years of age
• Are taking medicines containing nelfinavir (used to treat HIV infection)
• Have difficulty swallowing or persistent or unintended weight loss, vomiting, or blood in your vomit
• Have experienced previous stomach surgery
• Have severe liver problems (consult your doctor first)
• Have been told by a doctor that you have Barrett’s oesophagus
⸻
Interactions
Guardium may interact with several medicines, including clopidogrel (a blood thinner), methotrexate (used for cancer or arthritis), certain antifungal medicines such as ketoconazole or itraconazole, and medicines used to treat HIV such as atazanavir or nelfinavir. It may also affect the levels of digoxin (a heart medicine) in your body. St John’s Wort (a herbal supplement for low mood) can reduce the effectiveness of esomeprazole. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.
⸻
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
The safety of esomeprazole during pregnancy has not been fully established, and it is not recommended for use during pregnancy unless considered essential by a doctor. Esomeprazole may pass into breast milk and its use during breastfeeding is generally not recommended. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.
⸻
Alcohol
There is no direct interaction between esomeprazole and alcohol; however, alcohol is known to irritate the stomach lining and can worsen the symptoms of acid reflux and heartburn. It is advisable to limit alcohol consumption while experiencing acid reflux symptoms to help maximise the benefit of treatment.
⸻
Driving and Operating Machinery
Guardium Acid Reflux Control is not generally expected to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. However, in rare cases some people may experience dizziness or visual disturbances as a side effect. If you experience any such effects, do not drive or use machinery, and seek advice from your PillSorted pharmacist.
⸻
