    Description

    Phenergan 25mg – 56 Tablets

Phenergan 25mg tablets contain promethazine hydrochloride, a first-generation antihistamine used to relieve allergic conditions such as hay fever, hives, and allergic skin reactions, as well as to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting, motion sickness, and short-term insomnia in adults.

    How It Works

Promethazine hydrochloride works by blocking histamine H1 receptors in the body, reducing the effects of histamine — a natural chemical that causes allergy symptoms such as itching, sneezing, and a runny nose. It also has a sedative effect, which helps with short-term sleep difficulties and contributes to its anti-nausea properties by acting on areas of the brain that trigger vomiting.

    Directions for Use

Allergic conditions (adults and children over 10): 25mg at night, or up to 75mg daily if needed.
Nausea and vomiting (adults): 25mg the night before travel, or 25mg taken 1–2 hours before travel.
Short-term insomnia (adults and children over 16): 25–50mg taken at bedtime.
Children aged 5–10: doses vary by indication — refer to the patient information leaflet for full details.
Not for use in children under 2 years old.
Tablets should be swallowed whole with water. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.

    Active Ingredients

    • Promethazine hydrochloride 25mg per tablet

    Possible Side Effects

    • Drowsiness and sedation (very common)
    • Dizziness or difficulty concentrating
    • Dry mouth, nose, or throat
    • Blurred vision
    • Constipation or difficulty passing urine
    • Restlessness or excitability (particularly in children or elderly patients)
    • Skin sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity)
If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

    • Children under 2 years of age
    • People who are allergic to promethazine, other phenothiazines, or any ingredient in the tablets
    • People taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or who have taken them within the last 14 days
    • People with certain conditions affecting the liver, kidneys, heart, or epilepsy — consult a doctor first
    • People with angle-closure glaucoma or an enlarged prostate
    • Those who are comatose or severely drowsy from other sedative medicines

    Interactions

Phenergan can interact with a number of medicines and substances, including other sedatives, sleeping tablets, antidepressants (especially MAOIs and tricyclics), antipsychotics, opioid painkillers, some blood pressure medications, and anticholinergic medicines (such as those used for bladder or stomach conditions). Taking these together can increase drowsiness or other side effects. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

    Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Phenergan is not recommended during pregnancy, particularly in the last two weeks before the expected delivery date, as it may cause side effects in the newborn. Promethazine passes into breast milk and may cause excessive drowsiness in a breastfed baby, so it is generally not recommended whilst breastfeeding. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

    Alcohol

You should avoid drinking alcohol whilst taking Phenergan. Alcohol increases the sedative effect of promethazine, making you feel much more drowsy than usual. This combination can be dangerous, particularly if you need to drive or operate machinery.

    Driving and Operating Machinery

Phenergan causes significant drowsiness and can impair your ability to drive, cycle, or use tools and machinery safely. You should not drive or operate heavy machinery after taking this medicine. Drowsiness may persist into the following day, particularly with evening doses, so take care the morning after use as well.

    Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
