Who can use HIV PrEP?
HIV PrEP may be suitable if you:
- Are HIV-negative and want to lower your risk of getting HIV
- Can provide a recent negative HIV test result (a 4th-generation test within the last 4 weeks)
- Are in generally good health, with healthy kidney function
- Want a discreet, clinically reviewed option, taken daily or event-based
It may not be suitable if you:
- Already have HIV, or cannot confirm a recent negative HIV test
- Have reduced kidney function (eGFR below 60) or certain kidney conditions
- Have signs of a recent HIV exposure or seroconversion illness
- Are allergic to tenofovir or emtricitabine, or take medicines that interact with them (for example didanosine or other HIV antiretrovirals)
Event-based dosing (2-1-1) is only suitable for men who have sex with men, only with emtricitabine/tenofovir, and only if you have not had hepatitis B. Your assessment ensures this is checked properly.
