Description
Ferrous Sulfate 200mg – 60 Tablets
Ferrous Sulfate 200mg tablets are used to treat or prevent iron deficiency anaemia — a condition where the body does not have enough iron to produce healthy red blood cells. Each tablet contains 65mg of elemental iron, making it an effective and widely used iron supplement.
⸻
How It Works
Iron is an essential mineral that your body needs to make haemoglobin — the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around the body. When iron levels are low, your body cannot produce enough healthy red blood cells, leading to symptoms such as tiredness, weakness, and breathlessness. Ferrous sulfate replaces the iron your body is lacking, helping to restore normal red blood cell production over time.
⸻
Directions for Use
The usual dose for adults and children over 12 years is one tablet taken two to three times daily, or as directed by your doctor. Tablets should be swallowed whole with a full glass of water and can be taken with food if they cause stomach upset. It is best to take iron tablets on an empty stomach for maximum absorption, unless this causes discomfort. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.
⸻
Active Ingredients
• Ferrous sulfate 200mg (equivalent to approximately 65mg elemental iron) per tablet
⸻
Possible Side Effects
• Nausea or stomach upset
• Constipation or diarrhoea
• Stomach pain or cramps
• Dark or black stools (this is harmless and expected)
• Loss of appetite
• Heartburn or indigestion
If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.
⸻
Who Should Not Take This Medicine
• People who are allergic to ferrous sulfate or any of the tablet’s other ingredients
• People with iron overload conditions such as haemochromatosis or haemosiderosis
• People with certain blood disorders such as thalassaemia or haemolytic anaemia
• People who have had repeated blood transfusions
• Children under 12 years of age (unless prescribed by a doctor)
⸻
Interactions
Ferrous sulfate can interact with a number of medicines and foods, reducing the absorption of either the iron or the other medicine. Key interactions include:
• Antacids and indigestion remedies — reduce iron absorption
• Tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics — absorption of both may be reduced (take at least 2 hours apart)
• Levodopa and methyldopa — iron may reduce their effectiveness
• Levothyroxine (thyroid medication) — take at least 2 hours apart
• Calcium supplements — may reduce iron absorption
• Tea, coffee, and dairy products — may reduce iron absorption if consumed at the same time
Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.
⸻
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Iron deficiency is common during pregnancy, and ferrous sulfate may be recommended to treat or prevent anaemia in pregnant women. It is also generally considered safe to use whilst breastfeeding. However, the correct dose and suitability should always be confirmed with a healthcare professional. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.
⸻
Alcohol
There is no known direct interaction between ferrous sulfate and alcohol. However, excessive alcohol consumption can affect iron metabolism and overall nutritional status, so it is sensible to drink alcohol in moderation whilst taking iron supplements.
⸻
Driving and Operating Machinery
Ferrous sulfate is not known to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if your iron deficiency anaemia has been causing symptoms such as dizziness or fatigue, these may affect your ability to drive safely until your iron levels have improved.
⸻
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
