Description
Omacor Capsules 1000mg – 28 Capsules
Omacor is a prescription-strength omega-3 fatty acid supplement used to help lower high levels of triglycerides (a type of fat) in the blood, particularly in adults who have not responded adequately to diet and lifestyle changes alone. It may be used on its own or alongside other medicines such as statins.
⸻
How It Works
Each capsule contains highly purified omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), which work by reducing the amount of triglycerides your liver produces and helping to clear them from the bloodstream more effectively. This helps to bring dangerously high triglyceride levels down to a safer range, which can reduce the risk of certain heart and blood vessel problems.
⸻
Directions for Use
The usual adult dose for very high triglycerides (hypertriglyceridaemia) is 2 capsules twice daily (4 capsules in total per day), or as directed by your doctor. When used alongside a statin, the usual dose is 2 capsules once daily. Capsules should be swallowed whole with water, preferably with food, to reduce the chance of digestive side effects. Omacor is not recommended for use in children or adolescents under 18 years of age. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.
⸻
Active Ingredients
• Omega-3 acid ethyl esters 90: 1000mg per capsule (providing approximately 840mg of omega-3 fatty acids, of which approximately 460mg is eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and approximately 380mg is docosahexaenoic acid (DHA))
⸻
Possible Side Effects
• Fishy taste or burping
• Nausea or stomach discomfort
• Diarrhoea or loose stools
• Abdominal pain or bloating
• Skin rash or itching (uncommon)
• Increased blood sugar levels (uncommon, particularly relevant if you have diabetes)
• Dizziness (uncommon)
If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.
⸻
Who Should Not Take This Medicine
• People who are allergic to omega-3 fatty acids, fish, or any other ingredient in the capsule
• People with soya allergy (the capsule contains soya lecithin)
• Children and adolescents under 18 years of age
• People with a known bleeding disorder, unless under medical supervision
⸻
Interactions
Omacor may interact with anticoagulant medicines such as warfarin, potentially affecting how quickly your blood clots — regular INR monitoring is recommended if you take both together. It may also interact with other medicines that affect blood clotting, including aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.
⸻
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
There is limited data on the safety of Omacor during pregnancy, and it should only be used if clearly recommended by a doctor. It is not known whether Omacor passes into breast milk in significant amounts. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.
⸻
Alcohol
There is no known direct interaction between Omacor and alcohol. However, drinking alcohol regularly or excessively can itself raise triglyceride levels, which would work against the intended effect of this medicine. It is advisable to keep alcohol intake within recommended guidelines while taking Omacor.
⸻
Driving and Operating Machinery
Omacor is not expected to affect your ability to drive or use machinery. However, if you experience dizziness as a side effect, you should avoid driving or operating machinery until this passes.
⸻
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct heat and light. Do not freeze the capsules. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
