Your Wegovy Pen Unboxing: What to Expect
When your Wegovy delivery arrives from PillSorted, you’ll first notice the discreet outer packaging. It’s a plain cardboard box, designed to protect your privacy, with a clear “Keep Refrigerated” label. This is vital because Wegovy needs to be stored at fridge temperatures to maintain its efficacy.
Temperature-Controlled Delivery
Inside the outer box, you’ll find specialized temperature-controlled packaging. At PillSorted, we use innovative wool insulation and ice packs that keep your medication cool within fridge temperatures (2-8°C) for up to 36 hours. This ensures your Wegovy arrives in perfect condition, ready for safe storage and use.
What’s Inside Your Wegovy Pen Unboxing?
Beyond the protective layers, your Wegovy pen unboxing will reveal several key items:
- PillSorted Leaflet & Supplements: You’ll receive a leaflet from PillSorted, often including a sample of our vegan, UK-based, science-backed supplements designed to support your healthy living and weight loss goals.
- Wegovy FlexTouch Box: This white and purple box contains your Wegovy pen (semaglutide solution for injection) and disposable needles. The dosage (e.g., 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg, or 2.4 mg) will be clearly indicated on the box. Remember, your healthcare provider will guide you on the correct starting dose and how to titrate up.
- Patient Information Leaflet (PIL): This crucial document provides detailed instructions on how to use, store, and dispose of your Wegovy pen, as well as important safety information, potential side effects, and how to report them. Always read this leaflet thoroughly before your first injection.
- Wegovy FlexTouch Pen: This is the pre-filled pen itself, designed for once-weekly subcutaneous injections. Each pen typically contains four doses, meaning one pen will last you a whole month.
- NovoFine Plus Disposable Needles: You’ll receive a box of these fine needles, specifically designed for use with your Wegovy FlexTouch pen.
Storing Your Wegovy Pen
Proper storage is essential for the effectiveness of your Wegovy medication. Before its first use, your Wegovy pen must be stored in the refrigerator at a temperature between 2°C and 8°C. Do not freeze Wegovy. If it has been frozen, it must not be used.
Once you start using a pen, you can store it either in the refrigerator (2°C to 8°C) or at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to 6 weeks. Always keep the pen cap on to protect it from light. If you’re unsure about storage, always refer to the patient information leaflet or contact your pharmacist for advice.
Inspecting the Wegovy Pen
Before each injection, perform a quick check of your Wegovy pen:
- Check the Expiry Date: Ensure the pen is not expired. The expiry date is printed on the pen and the carton.
- Inspect the Liquid: Look through the pen window. The liquid inside should be clear and colourless. If it looks cloudy, contains particles, or is discoloured, do not use it. Contact PillSorted or your healthcare provider for guidance.
- Air Bubbles: It’s normal to see some small air bubbles in the pen. These do not affect your dose and are usually dispersed during the priming process.
Priming Your Wegovy Pen for First Use
When you use a new Wegovy pen for the very first time, it’s important to prime it. This ensures the pen is working correctly and expels any air from the needle, delivering the full dose. You only need to prime a new pen once; you do not need to prime it before each subsequent weekly injection.
- Attach a New Needle: Remove the paper tab from a new disposable needle. Screw the needle onto the pen until it’s firmly attached. Remove the outer cap, but keep the inner cap on for now.
- Set the Priming Dose: Twist the dose selector knob until the dose indicator shows the priming symbol (two dots).
- Remove Inner Cap & Prime: Carefully remove the inner needle cap. Hold the pen with the needle pointing upwards. Gently press and hold the dose button until the dose indicator returns to “0”. A drop of liquid should appear at the needle tip. If no drop appears after priming, repeat the process up to 6 times. If still no drop, use a new pen.
The Injection Process: Beyond the Wegovy Pen Unboxing
Selecting Your Injection Site
Wegovy is a subcutaneous injection, meaning it’s injected just under the skin. Common injection sites include:
- The front of your thighs
- Your tummy area (abdomen), avoiding the area around your navel
- The upper arm (if someone else is giving you the injection)
It’s crucial to rotate injection sites each week to prevent skin irritation or thickening. Do not inject into the same spot repeatedly. This is a key aspect of managing your medication effectively and is part of the comprehensive care we promote for general health and obesity management.
Administering the Dose
- Set the Dose: Twist the dose selector knob until your prescribed dose (e.g., 0.25 mg, 1 mg) is visible in the dose window. The Wegovy pen will display the actual strength you are injecting, unlike some other pens like Mounjaro which might click from 0 to 1.
- Inject: Pinch a fold of skin at your chosen injection site. Insert the needle straight into the skin. Press and hold the dose button until the dose counter returns to “0”. Continue to hold the button and count slowly to 6 to ensure the full dose is delivered. You will see the plunger moving up as the liquid is injected – this is perfectly normal.
- Remove the Needle: Once you’ve counted to 6, remove the needle from your skin.
Safe Disposal After Your Wegovy Pen Unboxing
After each injection, it’s vital to dispose of the needle safely:
- Remove the Needle: Carefully place the outer needle cap back onto the needle. Use this cap to unscrew the needle from the pen.
- Dispose in a Sharps Bin: Immediately place the used needle into a sharps bin. Never dispose of needles in household waste. Your pharmacy can provide a sharps bin, and advise on safe disposal in your local area.
- Cap the Pen: Replace the pen cap onto your Wegovy FlexTouch pen and store it as instructed for your next weekly dose.
