    Description

    Levonelle One Step 1.5mg – 1 Tablet

Levonelle One Step is an emergency contraceptive pill, sometimes called the “morning after pill”, used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or if your usual contraception has failed. It contains 1.5mg of levonorgestrel and should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex, within 72 hours (3 days).

    How It Works

Levonelle One Step works primarily by delaying or stopping ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary), so that sperm cannot fertilise an egg. It may also make it harder for sperm to reach an egg or prevent a fertilised egg from implanting in the womb. It is not an abortion pill and will not terminate an established pregnancy.

    Directions for Use

Take one tablet as soon as possible after unprotected sex — the sooner it is taken, the more effective it is. It can be taken with or without food. Levonelle One Step is suitable for women aged 16 and over; those under 16 should seek advice from a healthcare professional before use. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.

    Active Ingredients

    • Levonorgestrel 1,500 micrograms (1.5mg) per tablet

    Possible Side Effects

    • Nausea or feeling sick
    • Headache
    • Dizziness
    • Tiredness or fatigue
    • Irregular bleeding or spotting before your next period
    • Lower abdominal (tummy) pain or cramps
    • Breast tenderness
    • Vomiting (if you vomit within 2 hours of taking the tablet, contact a pharmacist or doctor, as you may need to take another tablet)

If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

    • Women who are already pregnant
    • Women who are allergic to levonorgestrel or any other ingredient in the tablet
    • Women with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, total lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption (as the tablet contains lactose)
    • Women with severe liver disease
    • Levonelle One Step is not intended for use in men or children

    Interactions

Some medicines can reduce the effectiveness of Levonelle One Step, including epilepsy medicines (such as phenytoin, carbamazepine, and phenobarbital), rifampicin and rifabutin (antibiotics), HIV medicines, the herbal remedy St John’s Wort, and some medicines for stomach problems such as antacids containing magnesium trisilicate. If you are taking any of these, the efficacy of emergency contraception may be reduced and you should consider an alternative such as a copper IUD (coil). Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

    Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Levonelle One Step should not be taken if you are already pregnant, as it will not terminate an established pregnancy. If you are breastfeeding, it is generally considered safe to use; however, a small amount of levonorgestrel may pass into breast milk — it is recommended to breastfeed before taking the tablet and to avoid breastfeeding for the 8 hours following use. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

    Alcohol

There is no known direct interaction between Levonelle One Step and alcohol. However, drinking alcohol does not affect how the tablet works, and you should still take the tablet as soon as possible regardless of alcohol consumption.

    Driving and Operating Machinery

Levonelle One Step may cause dizziness or tiredness in some people. If you feel dizzy or fatigued after taking the tablet, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until these effects have passed.

    Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
